Serve - Social Action
A major aspect of Or Ha Lev’s mission is our commitment to help those less fortunate. Our members are involved in several significant social action projects. In the time of COVID-19, we have had to restructure and create new projects that do adhere to social distancing and no-contact policies. Please read below to see what we have typically done over the past 8 years. We hope to resume this vital work once the pandemic is under control.
As things re-open, our programs will be re-instated gradually, as it is safe to do so.
“Faiths Against Hunger”
Our work with “Faiths Against Hunger” has been ongoing for 8 years. On the first Sunday morning of each month a group of members gathers at a centrally-located member’s home to prepare 175 meals, which one of our members then delivers to the St. Lucy’s Homeless Shelter in Jersey City. We gather at 11:00 AM to prepare the meals and then we all enjoy a potluck brunch together from 12:00 – 1:00 PM. Helping out on this project is also a popular activity for our teens and B’nei Mitzvah students and their families.
Roxbury Food Pantry
Or Ha Lev also supports the Roxbury Food Pantry throughout the year with donations of canned and boxed goods, hygiene supplies, clothing, etc. During the time of Covid-19, we have been supporting the Food Pantry with financial donations. The Food Pantry is located in Succasunna, the community where we hold our in-person services.
Clothing for Those Who Are Homeless
Each year our members make scarves and collect gloves, hats and other winter apparel for the homeless and for those less fortunate. This project, as with the others above, are ongoing.
Our community’s contributions in the area of Social Action have been covered in the local newspapers and in the NJ Jewish News numerous times.
